DIY: Classy Black Bar Cart / Drinks Trolley
This has got to be my favourite and most satisfying DIY so far. I’ve wanted a Bar Cart for absolutely ages, so the minute we moved in this was high on the list of priorities for me. However, we all know doing up a house is an expensive endeavour and the carts/trolleys I was looking at were just way out of my budget at the moment. That’s when I decided to DIY/hack it, so I started hunting high and low for the perfect cart to transform.
I finally found one with the 3 shelves I wanted, working wheels and at the bargain price of just £15 in a local charity shop, so all that was left was to gather a few supplies and get spraying - which I did in intervals across one weekend.
What I used:
Tea Trolley - bought from a charity shop
Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Spray Paint Satin Black
(we used a little over one can, but it will depend on your particular trolley)Rust-Oleum Surface Primer Stain Block White Matt
(if you can find a black primer this would probably be better but this is what we had)Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Semi Gloss Lacquer Top Coat
Fine Sandpaper
Masking Tape
Method:
Make sure you give your trolley a good clean before you start, I used sugar soap to make sure I was getting rid of any grease and dust, but any soap and water should do. Also, make sure it’s dry before starting the next steps.
Tape up the wheels to protect from the spray paint.
Give the whole trolley a good light coat of your primer, ensuring it’s all evenly covered and wait for this to dry.
Apply your first coat of the black spray paint, with an initial light coating.
Once dry (I’d leave it at least a few hours) you can use the sandpaper to smooth out any rough patches/imperfections.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have a full black colour, not sanding after your final coat of the black spray paint.
Leave overnight for the paint to harden before applying your top coat to seal and protect your paint from chipping.
Wait 48 hours for the paint to fully set and before finally removing the masking tape from the wheels.
Finally, deck your bar cart up in cocktail shakers and glasses galore… and maybe pour yourself a well earned drink?!
